"At my funeral, I want Meryl Streep crying in five different accents."
Last week we lost a beloved comedian who knew how to make people laugh even during the darkest of times. She was born Joan Alexandra Molinsky on June 8, 1933. She later took the name Rivers after her agent told her that she couldn’t be known as Joan Molinsky.
Rivers died on September 4, 2014, after the doctors removed her from life support. Joan had gone into cardiac arrest a few days earlier during a routine surgical procedure. Just like all her funeral plans, Joan had made the proper provisions through a medical power of attorney to allow her daughter, Melissa Rivers, to make the important decisions, like taking Joan off of life support. We would have expected nothing less from such an amazing woman.
She was a true pioneer paving the way for female comedians. Her fiery personality landed her in the hot seat most of her career. But she never stopped because she loved to make people laugh. And she never apologized because she only said what everyone else thought. Her carefree attitude and ability to laugh at herself set her apart and she will be sorely missed.
